Perito Moreno Glacier Horseback Ride

General Description

Moreno Glacier - Patagonia - Argentina A unique horseback riding experience to the world famous Perito Moreno and Upsala Glaciers. The latter is Glaciares NP largest glacier and offers the perfect gateway to the huge Ice Cape where origins 47-ice flows. The glacier is 50 km long and 9 km wide at the lake's edge where large chunks crash into the water, sufacing to become icebergs. We start at Alice Ranch (Estancia), near El Calafate, a typical southern Patagonian town. We ride through nothofagus forests, wades rivers and creeks, ride up valleys, mountain summits and ridges while enjoying spectacular views of bluish icebergs and beautiful sunsets in this very remote land. A unique experience for riders !

Itinerary

Moreno Glacier Horseback Ride - Patagonia - Argentina DAY 1:
From El Calafate we drive to Estancia Alice, a typical Patagonian ranch overlooking Argentino Lake. (D).

DAY 2:
Excursion to the awesome Perito Moreno Glacier.The first views of Moreno glacier are breathtaking vistas, down a narrow arm of Lago Argentino with the imposing Andean Mountains as a backdrop. A full morning to enjoy the glacier and the surroundings. The startling contrast of colour, sound, motion and size creates a continuously changing mosaic of indescribable beauty. Gigantic blocks of ice frequently break away and crash into the lake, sending spray hundreds of feet into the air with a sound of distant artillery fire. Optional 2 hour trekking on the glacier.
In the afternoon, guided tour of the estancia with shepherd-dog and sheep shearing demonstrations, followed by an introductory horse ride in the Patagonian steppes. Traditional Patagonian roast lamb dinner at the Estancia. (B D). Perito Moreno Horseback Ride - Patagonia - Argentina

DAY 3:
The riding adventure begins with a ride to the Frias Mount (1030 mts) from where, weather permitting, we should be able to see Fitz Roy Mount and as far as Torres Del Paine in Chile. Return to estancia Alice. (B L D).

DAY 4:
An early start takes us to the tiny port of Puerto Bandera, where you board a 75 passengers comfortable modern catamaran for 1,45 min Mount Fitz Roy - Patagonia - Argentina cruise on Lago Argentino. The navigation, offering great close up views of the Upsala Glacier, enters the Channel leading to Estancia Cristina, surrounded by towering ice-capped mountains and glowing ice-blue bergs floating in the lake. You then enjoy a spectacular 5/6 hour horse ride to a nearby lagoon and around the estancia to learn about its fascinating history. Return to estancia Alice. (B L D)

DAY 5:
Transfer out after breakfast (B).

Extensions

Two day trek to El Chalten at the footsteps of the Mount Fitzroy.
Excursion in Torres del Paine National Park, just across the Chilean border.
