Argentina produced its first wines in 1554. During the last century it consistently figured amongst the world major producers.
The wine country extends along the Andean foothills, from Salta in the North to Rio Negro in Patagonia.
Mendoza, in the Central Andes near the Aconcagua, is the wine capital of Argentina.
The few useless summer rains forced the settlers to create a complex irrigation
system, bringing the pure and mineral-rich Andean water to all the vineyards.
This water provides the rather taste to the characteristic wines. Although most wine
varieties are of French origin (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and
Syrahs for the red wines and Chardonnay, Chenin and Riesling for the white wines),
some grapes, such as the Malbec and Torrontes, prefer the climate and soil of Argentina and
develop better than in Europe, thus creating the finest of the Argentinean wines.

Extension
A holiday in Argentina should include a visit of one of the Estancias (ranch), the
most representative feature of Argentinean way of life, providing a unique opportunity
to learn more about the "gauchos" traditions and culture and appreciate their dexterity
in cattle and horse gathering. This is also a unique occasion to taste the
world wide famous "asado de carne" (Argentinean barbecue) while enjoying
the local music and dance and naturally some Argentinean wines.
We recommend Estancia Chateau d'Ancon, only 45 minutes from Mendoza, set in the heart
of the famous Mendoza wine country and facing the Tupungato Volcano (6000 metres).
A stay in this Estancia is particularly recommended to those wishing to drown themselves deeper into the
Wild Wine World altough the price is very high.
