Sixteen miles of natural sandy beach, a virgin mangrove-fringed lagoon,
a wilderness of coral-studded cayes, nearby jungle rivers, and pristine
rainforest, Garifuna Creole and Mayan cultures, and ancient Mayan ruins
make Placencia the ideal location for the adventure traveler!
The people of Placencia are from as diverse a background as the visitors who choose our home as a destination in their travels (travel tips). A wide selection of hotels, guesthouses, and restaurants are available to choose from, most with access to our renowned beaches and crystal blue water. Grab a hammock, relax, and enjoy the view.
Placencia is a paradise for the nature lover in you, as its knowledgable guides will show you. Start by exploring the beauty of the abundance of plants and flowers, and the birds, butterflies, and iguanas they attract throughout the penninsula.
One of the few places in Belize where you can walk for miles along a sandy
beach is in Placencia. It is possible to stroll seven miles north of the
village without interruption reaching Seine Bight Village. Despite the many
upscale resorts lining the coasts, there are still many secluded beaches.
Swimming is best at points of the land where sand builds up. Snorkellers
will find meadows of grass beds bordering the coastline, dotted by clusters
of small coral patch reefs. Snorkelling can offer you more than a glimpse of
the wonders of the Belize marine waters. Belizeans have always known that
diving is better in the southern half of the country. What makes diving so
interesting in Placencia is that here there is a distinct change between
the northern and southern structure of the Barrier Reef.
The rich variety of marine habitats also make Placencia an excellent place
for sport fishing. Grassy shallows around many of the Cayes are home to
schools of bonefish, tarpon and permit. Trolling along drop-offs and
channels nearly always lands barracuda and jacks, and occasionally the
mighty kingfish. The mangrove habitat is one of the most important
ecosystems in Belize.
Kayak the mangroves in our tranquil lagoon and perhaps you will be lucky enough to spot the manatees that live here. And if you are one of the many adventure travellers who come to Placencia, you can do the cayes by kayak, camping along the way on the unspoiled islands that dot the horizon from there to the reef and back again.
A trip to Placencia is not complete without a boat ride out to the incredibly diverse cayes that lie between Placencia and Belize's Barrier Reef - second in size only to Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Whether your desire is to snorkel the many small reefs and flats, dive our uncrowded pristine barrier reef, fish the world-renowned salt-water flats or just relax on a white sandy beach, its an experience you won't forget.
