Bolivia

The Heart of Latin America

Bolivia, straddling the Andes, is a land of giant mountains, cold desolate Altiplano and semi tropical lowlands. Landlocked between Chile and Peru to the west, Brazil to the north and east and Argentina and Paraguay to the South, it is the heart of South America. Bolivia is place of natural highs. It boasts the world's highest capital city (La Paz), the highest commercial airport, the highest navigable lake, the highest ski-run, the highest golf course and the highest number of military coups during its turbulent post-independence history. The first sight of La Paz is breathtaking - literally - for, at this altitude, breathing can be a problem. Why not explore one of the many markets and admire the locals in vermilion ponchos and the women with their voluminous skirts and bowler hats. A journey into the hinterland leads to the conclusion that Bolivia is like no other country. The Altiplano plateau stretches from the Peruvian border, north of Lake Titicaca, southwards to the Argentine border. Highland valleys south and east of the Altiplano boast near optimum climatic conditions and fertile soils. The Yungas form the transition zone between the icy peaks of the Andes and the steamy Amazonian forest. The Chaco is a hot dry impenetrable and uninhabited plain along the Paraguay and Argentine borders. Undeveloped swamps, savannas, scrubs and Amazonian rainforest occupy much of the north and east of the country. Each of these different zones is a Garden of Eden, a real paradise for fauna and flora lovers, littered with the remains of many ancient cultures as well as dinosaur tracks. Though nobody ever spotted dinosaurs, Bolivia is such a weird and unexpected world that it would come as no surprise if a prehistoric creature was sitting next to you on the bus.
