The Takesi trail links the desert Altiplano and the Yungas, the lush subtropical valleys covered
with thick cloud forest, sitting between the high Andes and the infinite green carpet of the
Amazon Basin. The trail, starting close to La Paz, follows sections of pre-Columbian paved roads, and finishes more than
9000 ft/3000 ms lower. You cross part of the Altiplano, hike along green canyons, cross rivers and visit abandoned mines...all
an adventure.
The Itinerary
DAY 1:
Drive from La Paz to San Francisco mine, where the trek starts
going up to a summit (4,650 m/15,246 ft). Then, almost all is downhill following
the canyon. We pass across the village of Takesi and camp one hour down along the
banks of the Takesi River at 3,400 m/11,152 ft. (L D)
DAY 2:
The trek goes down along a well preserved pre-Inca trail, passing the village
of Cacapi (2,600 m/8,528 ft), where the vegetation is already subtropical,
with banana, papaya and also coca leaves. It continues going down, then up
and down again until the bottom of the Chojlla mine, where the camp is set
(2,400 m/7,872 ft). (B L D)
DAY 3:
Trek from Chojlla to Yanacachi, then descending the canyon of the Takesi
river, crossing the village of Mocori, with great coca, coffee and citric
plantations until Puente Villa (1,100 m/3,608 ft). Overnight in the Tamampaya
hotel, outside of town. (B L D)
DAY4:
Morning at leisure to enjoy this peaceful place with great vegetation and
warm weather. After lunch private transportation to La Paz. (B L)
