Parnaiba Delta & Caju Island

East of "Lencois Maranhenses", between the states of "Maranhao" and "Piaui" runs the river "Parnaiba". The delta of the "Parnaiba" River, one of the few open sea deltas in the world, is made up of 80 islands and comprises a total area of 2700 km2. The delta map resembles the shape of a hand with 5 branches, called "Tutoia", "Melancieira" of "Carrapato", "Caju", "Canariuas" in "Maranhao" and "Barra do Rio Igaracu" in "Piaui". The diverse fauna in this unique and, for tourism as yet undiscovered region, comprises many birds, rodents, foxes, crocodiles, monkeys, deers, wild cats, aardvarks and many endangered species like sea turtles and dolphins. "Ilha de Caju" (Cashew Island), one of the main islands in the delta, is a true ecological sanctuary presenting a rare combination of ecosystems: caju trees, mangroves, dunes and pure crystalline lagoons formed bty rainwater. The island is protected by law since 1991 and access is possible only by boat .

DAY 1:
In Parnaiba, pick-up at the hotel or airport and transfer from the river port to "llha de Caju" by regional boat (the exact departure time depends on the tide). Arrival at Pier do "Calomby" and transfer to the "pousada". After lunch you have a free afternoon to enjoy the place. (L)

DAYS 2-3:
Two activities a day are proposed to the guests: hiking, horseback riding, canoe excursion....You explore the most beautiful parts of this untouched nature paradise, unique in the whole Brazilina coastline, having the opportunity to observe the abundant wildlife. The excursion scedule depends on the tide. (B L D).

DAY 4:
Return to Parnaiba. (B)

We recommend to extend your journey to Ubajara and Jericoacoara. You explore the fantastic Ceara's mountain range discover some of the most beautiful and lonely beaches of Brazil.
