East of "Lencois Maranhenses", between the states of "Maranhao" and
"Piaui" runs the river "Parnaiba". The delta of the "Parnaiba"
River,
one of the few open sea deltas in the world, is made up of 80
islands and comprises a total area of 2700 km2. The delta map
resembles the
shape of a hand with 5 branches, called "Tutoia", "Melancieira"
of "Carrapato", "Caju", "Canariuas" in "Maranhao" and "Barra do Rio Igaracu" in "Piaui". The diverse fauna in this unique and, for
tourism as yet undiscovered region, comprises many birds, rodents,
foxes,
crocodiles, monkeys, deers, wild cats, aardvarks and many endangered
species like sea turtles and dolphins. "Ilha de Caju" (Cashew
Island),
one of the main islands in the delta, is a true ecological sanctuary presenting a rare
combination of ecosystems: caju trees, mangroves, dunes and pure crystalline lagoons formed bty
rainwater. The island is protected by law since 1991 and access is possible only
by boat .
