"Brazil"

Carnival is one of the biggest events in Brazil, if not the biggest. Originating in Roman bacchanalia or in the ancient Egyptian festival of Isis, carnival, when introduced in Brazil by the Portuguese, acquired African rhythms and Indian costumes. Carnival in Brazil is a genuine national celebration in which every inhabitant, no matter from what social class or ethnic background, participates. Carnival's dates are:
2004: 21-24 of February
2005: 05-08 of February
2006: 25-28 of February
2007: 17-20 of February
In Rio and Salvador "Carnaval" is extended to the following weekend.

Carnival in Rio de Janeiro - Brazil Rio de Janeiro Carnival

Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is an immense spectacle, which has three major ingredients: the parade, the balls and the street. The 16 top level samba schools prepare all year for an hour of glory (8 samba schools perform on Sunday and the other 8 on Monday). Each school parades the length of the 'Sambdromo' and presents its one song. The smallest school has over 1500 participants and the largest over 4 to 5 thousand. Each school takes just over an hour for the 'defile'. The first school sets off around 19:00 and the last school finishes around 09:00. Rio carnival balls are elaborate costume parties that start around 23:00 and carry on until 05:00 or later. The balls are propelled by the never ending samba beat, supplied by live groups, who continuously change personnel to ensure that the music never stops. Some of the most popular balls are: the 'Sugar-Loaf Ball', the Yacht club Hawaiian ball, Gala Gay, Ball of the City, Actress Ball and some balls at the 5-star hotels. Tickets go on sale about 1 week before carnival starts and prices vary from US$ 60,00 to US$ 150,00 per person. Costumes don't have to be elaborate. You can pick up garlands of flowers and other accompaniments to help dress up your costume at every street corner.

Carnival in Salvador is particularly lively, with nearly everyone dancing in the streets from Thursday night to Wednesday morning. The carnival is mostly concentrated in three areas: the centre of the city, between Campo Grande and the Praga Municipal (the most exciting), by the Barra lighthouse and in Ondina, in the street on which the best hotels are located. With the growing popularity of Bahian music, Salvador's carnival is considered the best carnival in Brazil. At least 50 'trios electricos' among which the famous 'Banda Mel', 'Balida Beijo', and 'Chiciete corn Banana' go through the streets and meet each other on Praga Castro Alves. Parades from the 'Filhos de Gandhi', '116-aiy8' and the most popular 'Olodum', with 300 drummers and 2500 dancers, ensure that the music keeps going on.

Carnival in Recife and Olinda is the most picturesque carnival in Brazil. It starts with a 'pre-carnavalesca' week, after which, on Saturday the 'bioco', 'Galo da Madrugada', officially opens the festival. Carnival in Recife and Olinda is famous for its own rhythms, different from the Samba in Rio de Janeiro and the Axe-music in Salvador. Best known rhythms are 'Maracatu' (African origin), 'Caboclinhos' (dancers in traditional Indian garb who beat out the rhythm with bows and arrows), and of course 'Frevo', the unique and effervescent dance from Recife. In Recife the parade usually starts from Av. Conde da Boa Vista and then proceeds along Rua do Hospicio, Rua da Imperatriz, Ponte da Boa Vista, Praga da Independancia, Rua 1 de Margo and Rua do Imperador. Olinda has the nicest street carnival of Brazil. It is characterized by various, smaller, parades that dazzle through the city in a chaotic way. Musicians, headed by a giant doll, and hundreds of people dance on the exciting rhythms of the Frevo. Olinda has more than 10 carnival groups and every group, with its own colours and songs, is assigned some days to parade. The most famous groups are named'O Elefante de Olinda'and'Pitoinbeira dos Quatro Cantos'.
