The brand new cruise ship Mare Australis sails from Punta Arenas through the Patagonian Channels
and around Tierra del Fuego to the mythical Cape Horn.
Following the same spirit as the Terra Australis, the Mare Australis offers daily ground
excursions on remote islands, through trails in the native forests to glaciers
and to colonies of sea lion, elephant seals and penguins.
It also includes an
exclusive excursion to the CAPE HORN National Park. Each excursion includes talks on the
flora and fauna of the area.
The cruise starts in
Punta Arenas (Chile) each Saturday or in Ushuaia (Argentina) each Wednesday.
You can just take a one way between both cities or book the return journey. The one way cruise is maybe the most
enjoying way to reach Ushuaia from Punta Arenas.
DAY 1 (Saturday): PUNTA ARENAS / MAGELLAN STRAITS
In the afternoon, the crew headed by the
Captain welcomes the participants onboard and offers a cocktail. Immediately
after, the ship departs towards the end of the world along the mythical Strait of
Magellan. We sail through Patagonian Channels and around Tierra del Fuego.
This is just the beginning of a great adventure.
DAY 2: AINSWORTH BAY-MARINELLI GLACIER-TUCKER ISLET
At dawn, we sail through Almirantazgo Fjord till
Ainsworth Bay, in the midst of the Darwin Range, where we observe the 40 metres/45 yards high Marinelli Glacier.
We board our zodiac and disembark to visit a colony of Elephant Seals.
and enjoy a brief walk through the native woods to Beaver Dam.
The Australis Cruises Expedition Group will give us a brief talk about the ecosystem and geography
In the afternoon, we reach Tucker Islet where we visit a small colony of Magellanic Penguins.
Once back onboard, we observe on the other side of the island
a colony of cormorants and a rocky promontory with large sea lions and seals colonies.
DAY 3: D'AGOSTINI FJORD-SERRANO AND D'AGOSTINI GLACIER- CONDOR GLACIER
Dawn finds us sailing by the D'Agostini Fjord overlooked by the mighty Serrano Glacier.
Later, we sail close to the D'Agostini Glacier, one of the most impressive in the Patagonian
Channels, and disembark at Condor Bay. A zodiac excursion allows us to go ashore
to sightsee around the Condor Glacier. Afterwards, we resume our journey
through the Strait of Magellan to Brecknock Channel.
DAY 4: BEAGLE CHANNEL - YENDEGAIA - PUERTO WILLIAMS
After navigating across Desolation Bay and through
the O'Brian and Balleneros Channels we enter the north west extension of the Beagle Channel
to explore the spectacular
"Glaciers Avenue": Spain, Romanche, Germany, Italy, France
and Holland Galciers. Then, we disembark at Yendegaia Bay, where the first Chilean farm
of Tierra del Fuego is located. During the visit we are able to see the remains of the Yagan
settlements (native people of Tierra del Fuego). In the afternoon, we stop at Puerto Williams,
the southernmost village in the world, where you can take optional tours to Martin
Gusinde Museum, the Beavers lagoon or a flight over the impressive Cape Horn.
DAY 5 (Wednesday):USHUAIA
Early arrival in Ushuaia, the most important Argentinean city on Tierra del Fuego.
Here you may enjoy optional tours to explore the southernmost

region in South America, such as the Tierra del Fuego National Park or lake
Escondido. On this day, those passengers who took the Punta Arenas-Ushuaia
sector option disembark and new passengers embark between 17.00 and 19.00 with
destination to Punta Arenas.
DAY 6:CAPE HORN - WULAIA BAY
Navigation through Beagle and Murray Channels and disembark in the CABO DE HORNOS
(CAPE HORNS) National Park. Cape Horn is a natural sea wall of almost 425 metres/490 yards high that
was discovered on January 30, 1616 by a commercial expedition from the Netherlands
organised by Isaac Le Maire. We disembark in Walaia Bay to
visit one of the most important native site of the region.
DAY 7:PIA GLACIER - GARIBALDI GLACIER
We sail back across the main branch of the Beagle Channel to disembark at Pia Glacier.
We have a short walk to an observation point where we observe more examples of
the area's vegetation. In the afternoon, we enter Garibaldi Fjord and enjoy views of the Glacier
of the same name and over the impressive snow fields of the Darwin Range. We board our
zodiac to disembark at one of the beaches along this protected and beautiful place.
There we start a small trek to explore the virgin forests, which lush vegetation covers
the mountain slopes. We continue navigating through O'Brian and Ballenero Channels,
Bahia Desolada, Paso Aguirre and Brecknock Channel.
DAY 8:MAGDALENA ISLAND - PUNTA ARENAS
Early in the morning we disembark in Magdalena Island, home of more than 120.000 penguins, one of the
world biggest colony.
We walk to San Isidro Lighthouse and then, sail to Punta Arenas where we dock at 11.00 AM and
start disembarkment formalities.
