South of Coihaique lies General Carrera Lake, one of the most beautiful area of Chilean
Patagonia. Nearby you find San Rafael Lagoon and San Rafael Glacier, calving from the famous
Patagonian ice-cap, the third world's largest expanse of ice after Greenland and Antarctica.
The higest Patagonian summit, Mount San Valentin (4058 mts), overlook this stupendous ice field.
Southbound, lies the Baker River, a fisherman's paradise, as well as Lake Cochrane
in front of San Lorenzo Mount and its 3706 mts. You discover a land of pioneers
only recently opened to tourism. Travelling by plane, boat, car, horses or on foot,
this unforgettable adventure leads you through stunning sceneries of deep fjords, snow-capped
mountains, hanging glaciers falling into wide valleys, lakes or wild rivers.
This program is suitable both for riders and hikers.
DAY 1: BALMACEDA-TERRA LUNA
Reception in Balmaceda Airport and long drive down the Austral Road to Puerto Guadal.
The landscape now slowly changes. The dense and lush forests are replaced by rocky peaks
with barren slopes and thousands year old glaciers. We reach the shore of Lake General Carrera, the
second biggest lake in South America and visit (if possible) the "Capilla de Marmol"
(marble chapel), a cave carved by quiet water (a real natural marvel). Then, we keep going
southbound to reach Puerto Guadal, where we spend the night in Terra Luna Lodge enjoying a
spectacular view over the lake. (LD)
DAY 2: TERRA LUNA
Full day horse ride up to Veranada Area to discover the breathtaking views on the
surrounding mountains and the lake. This place is also rich with thousands of prehistoric fossils.
