Trekking around Chimborazo, Ecuador’s Highest Peak

"Ecuador"

Mount Chimborazo (6310 m) is the highest mountain in Ecuador and for a long time it was considered the highest mountain in the world! (but measured from the center of the terrestrial globe, its summit is in fact the highest point on earth). It has three major summits that can be seen during this trek. Vast areas with paramos and breathtaking views over the country and herds of vicuñas are the main highlights for this adventure.

The Itinerary

Day 1: Early drive from Quito to Urbina train station. Our first 3 hours trek will take us to our first campsite at the foothills of Nicolas Martinez Peak and near to the end of the impressive Abraspungo gorge. Camp at 3,700 m. (BL, D)

Day 2: The trek continues along the north-eastern slopes of Chimborazo with wonderful views over the mountain largest northern glaciers and also with views over Carihuairazo volcano. After 5-6 hours trek we arrive at Isapapungo campsite (Vicuñas camp) at 4,100 m. (B, BL, D)

Day 3: Trek to Pogyos camp. This day we will hike up to 4,800 m at the base of the glaciers, later on crossing the remains of the Zurita hut and then finally after 5 hours trek we arrive to our camp at 4,000 m. (B, BL, D)

Day 4: Long day hike (6-7 hours) up along the dry western slopes of Mount Chimborazo to finally reach the Whimper refuge at 5000m. We will overnight in the Carrel hut at 4,800 m of altitude. (B, BL, D

Day 5: Morning for leisure and relaxation and perhaps to hike up to the Chamonix Needles at 5,400 m. Descend to the Carrel refuge to meet our vehicle and drive back to Quito. (B)
