2ND SEGMENT CHIMBORAZO TREKKING

This trek will bring us near to the famous Chimborazo, highest peak in Ecuador (6.310m / 20,703ft) and Carihuairazo (5.020m / 16,471ft), its sister volcano. Both snowcapped volcanoes are very well known among mountain climbers, but hiking around in this area for a few days will be more than an unforgettable experience as well. Our trek will pass between the two mountains beside the typical "paramo" vegetation, allowing for great views of these and other volcanic peaks, like Tungurahua to the East and El Altar to the Southeast.

Day 1:
Our trip starts in Quito where a chartered bus will take us 150 kilometers South on the Panamerican Highway, also known as the Avenue of the Volcanoes, to near Mochapata where we will put up our first camp. On our way down, we will have the opportunity to visit a typical Indian market. Once camp is set up, you’ll have a chance to meet our local staff and hear about their lifestyles. These people will assist us with the use of their mules and horses to carry our gear.

Day 2:
After a hearty breakfast, our gear will be packed onto the animals and we’ll leave for the refuge of Mount Carihuairazo. Our Mocha Camp will be set up while you enjoy the fantastic views after climbing Cerro Piedra Negra.

Day 3:
Today we continue westward crossing Quebrada (ravine) Aucacan. By midday we’ll set up camp where you will have time to relax and enjoy this beautiful area. There are interesting side-trips to be made for those who are still ready for some further investigation of the zone.

Day 4:
Today we will hike to the area around Nido de los Condores (Condor’s nest) on the old route to Mount Chimborazo. Hopefully we will see some of these tremendous, ecologically important birds (Vultur gryphus). By midday we will reach El Arenal. Here we will meet our transport again and drive to Chimborazo refuge. Hiking in this area and later on drive to Baños (1800m), known as the gateway to the jungle. Hotel accommodation in Baños.

Day 5:
Visiting Baños and its surroundings (subtropical, lush vegetation, waterfalls). We will be back in Quito in the late afternoon - or, for those taking the 3rd segment to Cuenca, stay another night in Baños.
