Cuyabeno is a National Wildlife Reserve, located in the northeastern part of the Ecuadorian rain forest, in the province of Sucumbios. You will stay at a basic lodge, sleeping on matresses while being protected by a mosquito net. There are no private facilities, no hot shower but swimming in the nearby lake!
The reserve protects more than 600.000 hectares of mostly untouched terra firma and flooded forests. It is part of a Pleistocene Refuge, one of several areas of Amazon rainforest that survived the last Ice Age. These places served to populate the forest with species of plants and animals, evolved in isolation, and were new and unique to the area. The Cuyabeno Reserve is one of the ’hot spots’ of biodiversity on earth.
During the excursions you will see a lot of the jungle and its wildlife. Enjoy the many bird species, observe caimans at night, go piranha fishing and see the most incredible creatures of the Cuyabeno reserve, the fresh water dolphins. Make hikes through the primary forest and learn about the uses of the medicinal plants that grow in this region. There is a lot to do and to see, just visit this amazing part of the Ecuadorian jungle and discover the wonders which pristine primary rain forest offers you.
The Cuyabeno reserve is best reached by plane. In a 40 min. flight from Quito you will arrive in the jungle town Lago Agrio, from where you will be driven in 2-3 hours to the park entrance.
