Cuyabeno is a National reserve, located in the north-eastern part of Ecuador in the province Sucumbios. It is best reached by plane in a 40 min. flight from Quito to Lago Agrio. From the oil town Lago Agrio you will be driven in 2-3 hours to the park entrance. From there it is a 2-hour canoe trip to the Tapir Lodge.
The lodge is situated witihin the Cuyabeno Faunistic Production Reserve and was built in partnership with some family members of the Siona Community and private sponsors. The reserve protects more than 600.000 hectares of mostly untouched terra firme and flooded forests. It is part of a Pleistocene Refuge, one of several areas of Amazon rainforest that survived the last Ice Age. These places served to populate the forest with species of plants and animals, evolved in isolation, and were new and unique to the area. The Cuyabeno Reserve is one of the ’hot spots’ of biodiversity on earth.
Tapir Lodge has two different lodging areas of which the 15 meter high Tower is the most appealing one. The tower has 4 suites with private bathroom with hotwater and an amazing view over the Cuyabeno river & abundant flora.
The other part is a bungalow which has 4 rooms with private bathrooms with hotwater. The lodge has a restaurant area with capacity for 35 persons where national & international food is served to the guests of the lodge. In the social area you can find a small bar which offers softdrinks, alcoholic beverages & cocktails as well as small snacks. A small gift shop offers local handicrafts, souvenirs of the lodge & useful articles for a pleasant stay.
