The Maquipucuna Reserve, owned by the non-profit Maquipucuna Foundation, protects over 5,000 hectares of this unique habitat, which is just two hours to the Northwest of Quito on the western flank of the Andes Cordillera.
The Foundation's Casa Umachaca offers comfortable yet unpretentious accommodation in spacious double rooms and good quality local food. It overlooks a bubbling stream in the remote northern area of the Reserve. This will be your home base for exploring this wonderful remnant of the cloud forest in the company of our naturalist and local guides. The cloud forest is a unique and magical ecosystem where, for much of the year, the mist-shrouded trees bend under the weight of moisture-filled mosses, ferns, bromeliads and other epiphytes. On the slopes of the Andes between the rainforest and the paramo, the cloud forest is home to South America's only bear, the Spectacled Bear (Tremarctos ornatus). An enormous diversity of bird species also inhabits this ecosystem including the spectacular toucan barbet, the crimson-rumped toucanet, the colourful tanager flocks, the mountain-toucans, parrots, quetzals and ... hummingbirds.
Throughout your visit to the Maquipucuna Reserve you will be contributing directly to the conservation and sustainable development of this area, including the vitally important Spectacled bear monitoring program.
