The Laguna del Tigre National Park and Biotope covers a wide range of ecosystems, of which the most relevant one is the wetlands which include rivers, lagoons and swamps. We hike through these impressive landscapes which provide a habitat to a great variety of plants and animals to the El Peru archaeological site, before heading back to Flores.
Al trips are operated with both a local community and bi-lingual guide. The reason we use local community guides is two-fold. As well as the fact that local guides know the rainforest trails, wildlife and sites better than anyone, our employment of them helps to support the communities in the area and we hope will help to slow down the deforestation of the rainforest as local people can earn a good wage guiding tours instead of farming.
The Itinerary
Day 1: Flores to National Park "El Tigre"
You will first journey overland to the village community of Paso Caballos, a Quechi agricultural community, northwest of Flores. From here you will board a local boat up the Rio San Pedro and enjoy the amazing rainforest flora and fauna as you travel into the National Park of "El Tigre". Alighting at a river beach, you will then hike approximately 40mins to arrive at the campsite. Overnight camping.
Day 2: El Peru
This morning you will walk another 30mins to arrive actually within the El Peru Mayan Temple site. You will be able to explore the Jobontun Cave and onto the "Mirador de los Monos" – Monkey Lookout Point which is itself an overgrown Mayan Temple in the midst of the vast rainforest. From this point you can enjoy views of the surrounding canopy as well as the El Peru Lake. The trail then leads down into the main "plaza" or square of the site where there are many interesting ruins and standing stones. The wildlife in this area is abundant and includes toucans, spider & howling monkeys, and even some Scarlet Macaws can still be found here. Overnight camping.
Day 3: Return to Flores
Today you will return they way you came back to the river and down to Paso Caballos where you will be met by transportation to return you to Flores.
