Yaxha, Nakum & Tikal Jungle Trek

The Peten Rainforest area in northern Guatemala is home to an abundance of ancient Maya temple sites and tropical wildlife which are best viewed by taking an adventurous trekking trip through the jungle. During this adventurous trek, we visit the best kept secret in the Maya World, Yaxha, on the northern site of the Yaxha lagoon from where we trek to the little visited site of Nakum which is believed to have served as a trade center between Tikal, Holmul or the site of Naranjo.

Al trips are operated with both a local community and bi-lingual guide. The reason we use local community guides is two-fold. As well as the fact that local guides know the rainforest trails, wildlife and sites better than anyone, our employment of them helps to support the communities in the area and we hope will help to slow down the deforestation of the rainforest as local people can earn a good wage guiding tours instead of farming.

The Itinerary

Day 1: Flores to Yaxha to Nakum
You will be picked up from the hotel in Flores and transferred by bus to the Yaxha National Park. There will then be an opportunity to explore the beautiful ruin site and enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding rainforest and Lake Yaxha from the top of the pyramids. After lunch you will begin the 17km hike through the rainforest to Nakum site. (Approx 4hrs). Dinner and overnight camping at Nakum site.

Day 2: Nakum
After breakfast you can explore the Mayan Temple Site at Nakum and walk in the rainforest to view the tropical wildlife. Then you will trek to "Paso del Carmen" which is another 17km (4hrs Approx). Dinner and overnight Camping at Paso del Carmen.

Day 3: Tikal
After breakfast you will embark on the final stage of trekking from Paso del Carmen to Tikal National Park. This trek is approximately 17kms (4hrs) and you will arrive in Tikal in time to have lunch at a restaurant at the park entrance. We would suggest that upon arrival at Tikal guests take the rest of the day to relax, perhaps entering the site to enjoy the sunset from atop one of the temples but leaving the main exploration until the following day.
