Guyana is noted for its high diversity of bird and animal species. With little or no
human settlement, only 2% of the territory being occupied by man, most of the
country is still pristine and perfect for the nature and adventure lover who want to
experience the diversity of the tropical ecosystems.
This Expedition explores a remote region deep into the Amazon Forest, staying in Forest Ranger Lodges
or camping into the Amazon rainforest, having great opportunities to
glimpse elusive wildlife such as giant otters, monkeys, jaguars, deer, giant otters
and dolphins, among many other animals.
Also a great opportunity to experience the awesome Kaieuter Falls, second highets drop of the continent.
The Itinerary
DAY 1:
Arrival in Guyana and transfer to Ariantze Hotel in Georgetown.
DAY 2:
Today we visit Kaieteur National Park, home to the
longest single drop waterfalls in the world. We walk around the park, viewing
the falls from 4 different vantage points and take our aircraft back to Georgetown.
Overnight in Ariantze Hotel (BL).
DAY 3:
Early morning departure by 4x4 for trip to the heart of Guyana. Pass through the mining town of Linden and then into the rainforest of Guyana, to Kurupakari on the Essequibo River. Cross the river to Iwokrama International Centre. Afternoon free to explore the trails around the field station with an Iwokrama Ranger. Overnight at the Iwokrama Field Station. (BLD)
DAY 4:
Early morning boat trip followed by breakfast. View wildlife on a morning walk to a local water hole, where various birds, mammals and reptiles come to drink. After breakfast, you will leave the field station for the journey to Turtle Mountain, and a leisurely stroll up the mountain to its summit at 935ft (approx. 106m). It takes an hour to walk up the mountain, but the effort is more than worth it for the breathtaking views over the forest canopy when you get there. The rest of the afternoon will be spent setting up camp and exploring the area near to the Turtle Mountain Satellite Camp. (BLD).
DAY 5:
After breakfast, you will travel back to the Field Station along the Essequibo River, with the chance to see assorted wildlife. Spend the rest of the morning on a wildlife walk near the field station with an Iwokrama Ranger. The afternoon is free for you to relax, and then after dinner, take a boat ride to spot caiman and other nocturnal wildlife in the river after dark. Overnight at the Iwokrama Field Station. (BLD).
DAY 6:
Today you will be up before dawn for breakfast, so you can hit the trail to seek the elusive Jaguar. The Iwokrama forest is rapidly gaining an international reputation for its healthy jaguar populations that seem not to be troubled by the appearance of curious humans. No promises, but many have been lucky! The trip ends at the new canopy walkway, which winds 35M up through the treetops. Observe the wildlife and birdlife from this amazing perspective. After dinner return to the walkway to experience the canopy at night. Overnight in hammock camp. (BLD).
DAY 7:
Experience the dawn chorus, up close, in the canopy top. After breakfast continue by 4x4 to the Amerindian village of Surama. On arrival in Surama receive a welcome from a village counsellor and settle into your accommodation. A local guide will take you on a tour of the village. Visit the local school, medical centre and church along with some of the village houses. In the cool of late afternoon take a three mile walk across the savannah and through the rainforest to the Burro Burro River. Tonight enjoy an educational walk to observe wildlife and experience the mystique of the forest after dark. Overnight in a hammock at Carahaa Landing Camp. (BLD)
DAY 8: Today your guides will paddle you up the Burro Burro River to observe wildlife and birdlife. Stop along the way to swim or take walks into the forest. In the late afternoon watch or join in as your guides construct a camp on river bank. Enjoy a dinner cooked over an open fire before spending the night in your hammock camp. (BLD)
DAY 9:
Today continue paddling and exploring the Burro Burro River before returning to Carahaa Landing Camp and then walk back to Surama. Overnight at the Surama Guest House. (BLD).
DAY 10:
Morning departure by 4x4 for drive to Annai. Lunch at Rock View Lodge before a flight to Georgetown. Overnight at Ariantze Hotel or similar hotel. (BL).
DAY 11:
Transfer to Cheddi Jagan International Airport for your departing flight. (B).

Rated: Easy
Accommodation at Hotel Ariantze is twin or double. Accommodation at Surama is the Surama Guest House, once the four rooms are filled the overflow goes into village houses or the village office. At Iwokrama it is shared cabins with up to 5 beds.
