Remember that tall misty island that rises from the ocean in your favourite adventure movie? Remove the mist,
add a tropical sun and you have Guanaja, the tallest of the Bay Islands and reputedly the most
beautiful.
Guanaja is a very unique island as it is mostly covered by Caribbean pine, to the point that Columbus originally named it
Pine Island. Further, there are no roads on Guanaja.
Guanaja is only 12 miles long, 7 miles wide and is the farthest offshore of the Bay Islands. The northern barrier reef
is well formed and is one-quarter to one-mhalf mile from shore, with only four cuts that traverse it.
A continuous wall borders the eight mile long reef Off the wall are several notable pinnacles and on the inside there is a
labyrinth of volcanic caverns. The southern fringing reef parrallels a series of coconut covered islets. The shallow reef is an elkhorn garden, the
deep sections are spur and grooves leading to a wall or reef pinnacles. A very impressive shipwreck lies in 90 feet of water off this reef.
