Laguna Beach Resort diving offers approximately 100 dive sites (40 buoy sites), some of the highlights are as follows:
South side:
Diving Utila's South side offers platform fringing reefs. Depths of 15-25 ft. are excellent for long shallow dives exploring the tongue and groove coral formations. Most walls slope gradually to 70 or 80 ft. The hard corals are abundant and varied due to the southern exposure. Young black coral is found throughout this area along with a wide variety of colourful tropical. Westward from Jack Neal Point expect occasional hawksbill and green turtle sightings. All along the South side keep an eye on the deep blue for the resident spotted eagle rays cruising parallel to the wall.
Sea Mounts:
Reaching up to within 30-45 ft. of the surface and sloping down to as deep as 200 ft., sea mounts are dotted around within a few miles of Utila's coast. Most of the seamounts we visit can be circumnavigated 2 or 3 times during an excellent multilevel dive. The most lush soft coral diving found in the Bay Islands is found here. Expect the unexpected with a variety of pelagics. It is not uncommon to see schools of jacks, snappers, spade fish, and every species of grouper found in the Bay Islands at just one dive site. Look for resident hawksbill or green turtles; spotted, green, and goldentail moray eels; and balloon, porcupine, and webbed urrfish puffers.
North side (Turtle Harbour):
On the lip of the Continental Shelf a plateau at 25 ft., edged by pillar and mountainous star coral, hosts an active fish nursery. This platform gives way dramatically to a sheer, deep wall extending well below l000 ft. in many places. On the wall sparse hard corals, due to the northern exposure, are crowded by profuse sponge formations. Expect dog snapper, mackerel, permot, grouper, and ray at depth. Occasional hawksbill and green turtles are seen nesting and feeding on the shelves. Turtle Harbour, as the name suggests, is a turtle nesting ground. Also look for midnight parrotfish between Turtle and Rock Harbour.
Ironshore:
Along Utila's eastern shore, the volcanic coastline makes for unusually beautiful shallow diving with the waves gently breaking right overhead.
Whale sharks:
The largest fish in our oceans, whale sharks feed year-round off the coast of Utila. Growing as long as 60 ft., an opportunity to swim with this animal is awe-inspiring.
