The Resort
From the moment you begin the assent up the road leading to The Inn of
Last Resort, you realise that this vacation will be unlike any other you
have taken. As the vehicle you ride in climbs through the trees and hills,
past the cows and calves (and, occasionally, through the cows and calves),
and approaches the tree-lined gate and road into the resort, you feel
your other life receding and the peace and tranquillity of Island life taking
control. Entering the resort's courtyard, the first thing you notice
is that all of the buildings appear to have trees growing out of their
stairs and roofs. The Inn's builders took great steps to ensure that
the natural beauty of the area remained intact -- even if that entailed
building a staircase around a huge old tree. The enchanting lodge
restaurant at the water's edge serves a healthy, delicious menu for all
three meals. Breakfast is an open menu with a variety of items to
choose from, lunch and dinner is a fixed menu. From 6 - 7 pm, the bar offers free appetizers.
The bar/lounge is a cosy nook for a leisurely drink or board games.
As an added touch of utter luxury, why not let a certified massage
therapist ease away stress and cares.
The Accommodation
Nestled among the towering trees on a hill overlooking the ocean,
30 large, air-conditioned rooms with private hot-water showers and a
tastefully understated decor await you in this wonderful resort. The
workmanship evident in all of the buildings -- beautiful wooden designs
completed with obvious care and attention to detail -- will amaze you.
Unlike many wooden structures on the Island, The Inn of Last Resort's
buildings are solidly constructed and carefully sealed to keep nature
out and your privacy intact. The spacious rooms provide plenty of area
to unpack and stretch out. Modern bathrooms, ceiling fans, and powerful
air conditioners make your room a haven of relaxation and comfort. Each
room has a queen size bed, two twin beds in a corner seating arrangement
to provide extra sleeping space, and ceiling fans above each bed. Screened
and easily opened picture windows capture the splendid vistas and offer
comfortable cross ventilation for guests who prefer ceiling fans to air
conditioning. The gentle sea breezes that fill the courtyard invite you
to nap in a hammock or stretch out with a good book on the spacious
porches.
Activities
Snorkelling - Relaxing:
The resort offers hammocks, a small library, a game room with bumper pool and board games and
a large screen TV with satellite dish programs.
Behind the resort is another body of water, the resort's lagoon.
The resort does not have a sand beach, and therefore does not have much
problem with sand flies. The lagoon is lovely, has a long dock, with a
platform that has one side shaded with a hammock and the other side with
a couple of lounge chairs for sunbathing. The water is clear and shallow
and the snorkelling is excellent, as the lagoon is protected from the
sea by the reef at the entrance. There are steps at the dock to allow
easy access to the water. Snorkellers/sunbathers are allowed to go on
the dive boats. The tops of the dive boats are equipped with
ladders and toe rails to allow easy access for sunbathing. For snorkellers
on the vacation package of 5 nights or more, there is no charge for using our
snorkel gear.
Diving:
The Inn's 42 ft. dive boat, built by island craftsmen, is a beauty, and
stands ready to ferry you to a stunning array of dive sites. "Miss Susan"
and "Special Lady" are berthed alongside the roomy and smartly equipped
dive shop, convenient to tanks and gear. The fully equipped fishing boat
can take you on a variety of great expeditions, and we even cook your
fresh catch when you return.
One day a week, weather permitting, everyone is ferried by dive boat to
the deserted beach area between West End and West Bay, for a picnic lunch
and snorkelling, between the morning dives and the afternoon dive on the
way back from the beach.
Other Activities:
Fishing charters can be arranged with a local guide. The resort also has a
2 seats kayak available at no charge. No need to say that sunset
cruises, day sails, jet ski tours, sea kayaking and horseback riding can be arranged upon demand, as well
as a glass bottom boat journey for the non-divers to discover what all the fuss is about!
