Although called "Two Worlds", we should call this journey "Three Worlds" as we explore each of
the worlds that make up Honduras. We start with the second world, the world of the Maya in Copan.
Then we travel on to Yojoa Lake surrounded by the mountains covered with cloud forests, or the first world of Honduras. Finally,
we head towards the Caribbean Coast where we cover Garifunas, Moskitia and end on Utila in the Bay Islands. Truly
the third world of Honduras!
The Itinerary
Day 1:
Arrival in San Pedro Sula. Transfer to your hotel. Overnight in San Pedro Sula.
Day 2:
A representative who will transfer you to the direct service bus for Copan will meet you at your hotel. You will travel through beautiful countryside. A hotel reservation will be made for you in Copan. This hotel is only a short walk from the direct bus terminal. The rest of the afternoon is left free to enjoy and explore the picturesque village of Copan. Overnight in Copan.
Day 3:
This morning a guide will meet you in your hotel. He will escort you to the Copan Ruins Park, which is located 20 minutes walk from Copan. You will tour the legendary Archaeological Park of Copan, which consists of two main sites: the ruins and the sepulchres. Learn about the impressive 63-step stairway with over 2,500 hieroglyphs and masterfully carved Stella. You will return to Copan in time to take the after-noon direct bus back to San Pedro Sula. Day 4:
A guide for a San Pedro Sula City Tour will meet you at your hotel at 8.30. To start our tour we will visit the down town area to observe the intense commercial activity of this fastest growing city in Central America. We then visit the Museum of San Pedro Sula. In the afternoon we take the direct deluxe bus to La Ceiba. Overnight La Ceiba
Day 5:
Morning flight to Palacios. After arrival, we board a motorized canoe which locals call a "tuktuk". We cross the huge Ibans Lagoon before reaching the community of Playitas. Here we start our hike lasting approximately 1 hour to the Misquito village of Kuri. In the after-noon we have leisure time to enjoy the village's beautiful beachand to interact with the locals. Overnight in Kuri.
Day 6:
After breakfast we board a boat that will take us from Kuri to the Pech community of Las Marias. Going up counter currents along the banks of the Platano river. Along the way we will observe the ecological change between the coastal vegetation formed mainly by mangroves and lagoons, and the tropical lowland rainforest. In the late afternoon we arrive in Las Marias. Typical dinner. Overnight in Las Marias.
Day 7:
After breakfast we leave by pipante, with our local guides. The pipantes are perfect for viewing the flora and fauna of the virgin tropical rainforest along the rivers edge. We are poled up the river against the current; we take a rest stop and a jungle hike before we arrive at our accommodation. After lunch we return to our pipantes and visit the first set of petroglphs. Which consists of numerous mysterious rock carvings. We return to our lodging late afternoon. Overnight Las Marias.
Day 8:
We leave early in then morning for a day hiking into the tropical rainforest. The forest around Las Marias offers many hiking trails of different levels of difficulty, these trails will lead us through virgin forest, that is home to over 350 species of birds and to many large mammal species, some being white-faced monkeys, howler monkeys, giant anteaters, white-tailed deer and white-lipped peccaries. We return to Las Marias late afternoon. Overnight Las Marias.
Day 9:
After breakfast we take a hike into the heart of the jungle, we will observe the rich diversity of flora and fauna in the company of our guides, the Pech. After the hike, we will return to Las Marias, with leisure time to interact with locals, relax or to bathe in the river. Overnight Las Marias.
Day 10:
Early in the morning we say goodbye to the Pech and return to the Caribbean village of Kuri. During the boat ride we will admire the exotic birds sighted along the way. After lunch enjoy the unspoiled beach. At nightfall we will take a dugout canoe to explore the mangrove lagoon close to Kuri to observe crocodiles. Typical local dinner. Overnight in Kuri.
Day 11:
After breakfast we walk back to the community of Playitas where our "tuktuk" waits to return us to Palacios. Flight from Palacios to La Ceiba then on to Utila. Overnight Utila.
Day 12 & 13:
Days left free to enjoy Utila with its funky Island atmosphere and Caribbean charm. Daily activities such as diving, snorkelling, sea kayak-ing or island exploring trips can all be organised at an additional cost. Overnights Utila.
Day 14:
Morning transfer to the airport in Utila for a flight to San Pedro Sula in time for your international departure flight.
General Information
Rated: Respect for the culture and the natural environment are required
of persons travelling to the Mosquitia. Travelling in this remote region is rudimentary, coarse
and rustic. Travel conditions demand strength, tolerance, flexibility and
understanding from the travellers. Lodging is very basic, although we provide the best
available in the region.
