Utila is the new kid on the block of diving and island tourism. The smallest and flattest of the three major Bay Islands, Utila is the closest to the mainland. The island is 9.5 miles long and 3 miles wide. Land transportation on Utila is limited to a few pickup trucks and bevy of all terrain vehicles that run along the beach road from its airport to East Harbour Town. There are 2 hills on the otherwise horizontal landscape, one of which is a hollow shell of an extinct volcanoe. Local divers extol the diversity of the dive experience, leaning on the fact that Utila is the only major Bay Island that borders the continental shelf, with a shallow platform laced with pinnacles on the inshore side and a vertical wall facing the abyss on the outside. Reef pinnacles rise dramatically from the continental shelf forming aoses of coral, sponge and fish life. Close to shore is a series of shallow coral gardens, perfect for snorkeling and night scuba dives. Another well-known feature of the abyss side is the mini-drop-off and cavern, of which the ceiling is pocked with openings pierced by bands of sunlight. Utila is a Mecca for whale shark watchers, may be the best place in the entire Caribbean!
