The Resort
The Bay Islands lie off Honduras' Caribbean coast and comprise three major islands with an assortment of outlying
cayes. Roatan, the largest, is the most developed with good communication systems, air conditioned hotels, roads,
taxis, and a new modern airport. Utila is the smallest of the three main islands; it has no large, luxury resorts, but a
good selection of small, moderately-priced inns. This island caters primarily to divers on a budget. It is supposedly
the most economical place to get certified (Scuba) in the Caribbean.
The green and hilly island of Guanaja is the least developed. Much of the isle is wilderness and rarely explored by
outsiders. The small airstrip consists of a short piece of tarmac, a thatch-covered refreshment stand, and a handful
of young boys eager to tote your bags to the awaiting boats - the only form of transportation around the island.
Both private resort launches and water taxis congregate along the dock to greet the arrival of the two, and
sometimes three, daily planes that come into the island.
If you are fortunate to visit at just the right time you might observe the phenomena of bioluminescence. Sometimes
during an evening swim at West Peak the disturbed waters will glow giving your whole body a greenish halo effect.
It is said that only a handful of bioluminescence locations are known to man. Another special treat on a moonless
night is the glory of the starry sky. Without the moon and especially without the night lights of cities and towns the
heavens are magnificently clear and star-filled.
The Accommodation
Guests at West Peak are accommodated in individual cabins with private baths, screened porches and double or
twin beds. Each cabin is nestled amidst the tropical foliage a discrete distanc e from other cabins and within the
sound of the surf. Prices include three meals per day served at the West Peak bar/restaurant and for guests booking
a one week stay price also includes transport to and from the Guanaja airstrip. Upon arrival at the Guan aja airport
water taxis are available to take visitors to their destinations.
Activities
Guanaja combines the undersea world of coral and colorful fish with the serene island style of times past. The pace
of life is slow on the island, and it is easy to find solitude on the sandy shores. The main town of Bonacca, built over
several small cayes, is an enchanting place of fragile stilt -houses, well-worn footpaths, rickety docks and narrow
canals. Visitors will find this island and West Peak a peaceful and relaxing sojourn from the outside world. As West
Peak is remote it is advised that guests plan to participate in some activities. A boat trip is highly suggested in
order to see and appreciate the whole island. Hiking is rugged and will require good hiking shoes. The trips might include: a boat ride to a dive site for an afternoon of snorkeling, a trip up the north shore to hike to the waterfalls, or perhaps a visit to the stilted town of Bonacca. And for guests who kayak but do not want to partake of a full week of kayaking, day trips can be easily organized.
Kayaking:
West Peak Inn also offers sea kayaking journeys . For details, please refer to the special Sea Kayaking Journey.
Diving:
West Peak Inn offers full scuba diving services. From the beaches guests and crew will launch traditional island dories for the short journeys to the various dive sites. Because goups are very small each diver has some input into what type of dive he or she would like depending on weather conditions, skills and interests.
