During this journey you have the opportunity to sample one of Nicaragua's wildest
region : the San Juan River Basin. Our first stop is the border-trading town of San
Carlos from where we move east
along the San Juan River to the town of El Castillo, a small, colourful and picturesque
village inhabited by easy-going people.
The highlights of this river journey are the visit
of the 300 year-old Spanish fortress, an excursion
into the Indio Maiz Biological Reserve, one of
the most diverse in Central America and a canoe
tour on the little Bartola River surrounded by a
luxuriant rainforest where birds and other animals abounds.
Accommodation is simple but in a charming hostel
located on a hill where you enjoy fantastic views of the
River.
