Under the protection of the Inca Empire, a small native community inhabited Anapia Island
before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors. Later, Anapia became a Spanish hacienda until the
ownership passed again to the native community. 280 families live scattered around
the eastern section of the island, divided into agricultural and residential zones.
Seventy five percent of the population work the land. Their main products are potatoes, ocas and
Andean cereals such as quinua and amaranth. The rest are fishermen who work especially at
sunrise and sunset in the surrounding areas of Lake Titikaka.
This journey is the result of the initiative of the local community and a private business. The
quality of the tourist services is guaranteed by an on-going training program for the local population, allowing
residents to improve the quality of their lives while strengthening their cultural Aymara identity.
Hikes to observe wildlife and fauna are available throughout the island, but its main attraction
is the opportunity to live with the local population, participate in their festivities and discover their
traditional way of life while sharing their typical food and lodge within the community in rustic,
but warm and clean rooms, with basic services and facilities.
This journey can be made from Puno in Peru to Copacabana in Bolivia or from Copacabana to Puno.
Day 1: Puno - Yuspique - Anapia
Early morning, we leave Puno by bus towards Lake Titikaka. A local motorboat brings us to
Yuspique Island, where we enjoy a lunch with the native fishermen, consisting of huatia (ground baked potatoes) and fish from the
morning catch. We walk around the island, visiting the pre-Inca archaeological remains with
a native guide and admiring the vicuna herds. From Yuspique, we continue our journey to Anapia in
local fishermen's sailboats. We are welcomed to the island by our host families. After settling in,
we meet the rest of the community and join them for dinner and folklore music (L D).
Day 2: Anapia - Yunguyo - Copacabana
Early risers can join the fishermen on their morning fishing journey on the lake before joining
the host family for breakfast. We leave Anapia by motorboat and catch the bus to Tunguyo and Copacabana (B).
