Cusco - Sacred Valley - Machu Picchu - Manu Biosphere Reserve

The rolling hills, beautiful countryside and colourful communities that surround Cusco are ideal for exploration by bicycle. While biking to Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Inkas, we admire the magnificent views the Sacred Valley offers and visit the living Inka town of Ollantaytambo and many other archaeological groups. Full of new impressions, we rest while the bus brings us to the village of Chahuaytiri on the way to Paucartambo. From here we bike to the chullpas of Ninamarca and the town of Paucartambo, the gateway to the Amazon. Enjoying a well deserved rest, we continue by bus towards the Ajanaco pass, the entrance of the Manu Biosphere Reserve. As soon as we start the descent, the road winds its way through dense cloud forest till we reach the rainforest and our campsite at Tres Cruses from where we admire the sun rise over the mighty Amazon Basin and the Madre de Dios River. During two days, we explore the rainforest on foot as well as on two wheels, admiring the abundant plant and wildlife. Finally, we sail the Madre de Dios River to Boca Manu and fly back to Cusco.

The Itinerary

DAY 1:(18 km)
At Cusco Airport, you will be welcomed by our Off the Road Team, who will transfer you to the hotel. After lunch, we enjoy some biking while visiting important archaeological groups like Sacsayhuaman, Quenqo, Pucapucara and Tambomachay, from where we descend to the city by a short cut.

DAY 2:(45 km)
A short bus drive brings us to Chinchero, where we begin our biking adventure. On our way to the Posada del Inca in Yucay, we visit the ruins of Moray and the salt pans of Moras before descending to the Sacred Valley (B L)

DAY 3:(65 km)
From Yucay, we bike to Ollantaytambo and visit the living Inka village and the temple complex, before continuing to Chillca where we cross the Vilcanota River and continue towards the ruins of Llactapata and km 88 (starting point of the famous Inka Trail). Along the rail road, we continue to Aguas Calientes, where we spend the night in a hotel (B L)

DAY 4:
Early morning, we head to Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Inkas. We explore this mysterious city during a guided tour and climb Wayna Picchu (young mountain) from where we enjoy the magnificent view over the city and the surrounding mountains. After lunch in Aguas Calientes, we return by train to Ollantaytambo, from where our bus brings us to our hotel in Yucay (B)

DAY 5: (65 km)
Leaving the fertile Sacred Valley behind, the bus brings us to the village of Chahuaytiri, from where we bike to the chullpas of Ninamarca (funeral towers) and the town of Paucartambo. After lunch, we enjoy a well deserved rest while the bus climbs up the Ajanaco pass, entrance to the Manu Biosphere Reserve. From here the road winds its way down the Andean cloud forest our campsite at Tres Cruses (B D)

DAY 6:
After admiring the sun rise above the mighty Amazon Basin and the Madre de Dios River, we hike through the cloud forest towards Union (7 hours), where we join our support team in the lodge (B L D)

DAY 7: (70 km)
After observing the Gallito de las Rocas, we mount our bikes and descend to the village of Pilcopata at the foothills of the Andes. After lunch, we continue to Atalaya, on the bank of the Madre de Dios and spent the night at the Amazonia Lodge (B D)

DAY 8:
Today, we enjoy the beauty of the rainforest while sailing the Madre de Dios River from Atalaya to the point where it joins the Manu River: Boca Manu. From Boca Manu we fly back to Cusco, admiring the rainforest, cloudforest and majestic mountains of the Andes from up in the sky (B L).

DAY 9:
After breakfast, transfer to the airport or continuation of your holiday (B)

All transport as mentioned, accommodation in 3 star hotels (5 nights), lodges (2 nights), or tents (1 night in twin tents with sleeping pads), meals as mentioned, snacks during mountainbiking journeys, experienced guides and bicycle mechanic

Not included:
Sleeping bag, mountainbike (a 21 speed and front suspension mountainbike, helmet and gloves can be hired on pre-arrangement), bottled drinks except water, airport tax, tips, items of a personal nature e.g. laundry, excess luggage charges.

Included in price:
