The Angel Falls are not only the world's highest waterfalls (979 m), but also form the
world's greatest uninterrupted drop (807 m or 16 times the height of Niagara Falls).
From the largest and most awe-some tabletop mountain of the Gran Sabana, the Auyantepuy
("mountain of the evil god" in the Pemon language), the water tumbles down into the
jungle of the Canyon del Diablo (Devil's canyon). Its almost perfectly vertical walls
created a truly inaccessible Lost World.
From Ciudad Bolivar on the Orinoco River, we fly over the spectacular Angel Falls on our way to
Kavac, a Carib Indian community located at the base of the south east face of Auyantepuy in
the Canaima National Park. From here, we hike into the Kavac Gorge and stay overnight with an
Indian Community. The next day, by dugout canoe, we depart on a 4 day river journey to
the Angel Falls and onto Canaima Camp for our flight back to Caracas.
The Itinerary
DAY 1:
From Ciudad Bolivar, we fly by charter plane to the Pemon
Indian settlement of Kavac, located at the south-east face of Auyantepuy. Sometimes the pilot
flies over the Angel Falls en route, but this is not guaranteed as it depends on weather condition and pilot's will. After lunch,
we walk to the base of the mountain and the beautiful Kavac Gorge, which we cross swimming
or by canoe up to the waterfall. We return to our spacious, round thatched
Indian huts with hammocks/netting for the night (L D).
DAY 2:
From the port of Kamarata, we travel the Akanan River by motor-dugout canoes.
While running the river and its rapids around the tepuy and through the dense jungle,
we admire and photograph the Auyantepuy from changing angles. Overnight in hammocks at
Iwana-Meru (B L D).
DAY 3:
Today, we continue down the Akanan River to the confluence with the Carrao and up to
Arenal Camp near the junction with the Churun River (location of the Angel Falls) (B L D).
DAY 4:
Early morning, we navigate the Churun River in the Devils Canyon and travel up to
Ratoncito Island. From here, we hike through dense rainforest to the Angel Falls viewpoint.
Another 20 minutes brings us to the base of the falls where we enjoy a refreshing swim, before
returning to Arenal Camp for the night (B L D).
DAY 5:
We travel to Canaima, sailing downstream to the pool of joy nearby the 150 ft high Sapo Falls. We may visit the falls and walk behind the water curtain (this excursion is optional and not
guaranteed)
