This unique adventures takes us through the fabled " Lost World" of Canaima National Park. We bike along mighty rivers, through savannah and dense jungle.
The Itinerary
Day 1
At 8:00 am, flight from Ciudad Bolivar to Wonken.
In the morning we fly from Ciudad Bolivar to Wonken, a missionary station of the
Pemon Indians right in the heart of Sabana Grande. After two hours we land on a
small runway. After lunch we take our bikes for a first ride (10 km through savannahs).
Day 2
Drive to the Apauray-Wonken-Pampatameru rapid at the fork of Apongua-Kukenan river (30 - 35 km).
We drive along Indian paths mainly through flat savannah. During rainy season
the paths are quite muddy, therefore bikes sometimes have to be pushed or carried.
We pass several rivers where we can refresh ourselves. We stay in tents at
the fork of the river at the Pampatameru Rapids.
Day 3
Crossing the river and drive to an Indian settlement (30 - 40 km savannah).
In the morning an adventurous river crossing is expecting us. We have to swim
through Rio Kukenan (approx. 25 m wide). Afterwards we cross an area of bushland
and hilly savannah to our overnight camp at the Apoipo Indian settlement. Here we
can stock up with food.
Day 4
Drive to Betania and on to the dirt road Sta. Elena - Icabaru (35 km through jungle).
We drive on with our bikes, now on a road for 4WD's to the Indian settlement
Betania which is close to the road Sta. Elena - El Pauji. This path is
leading us through dense forest. From there we head to the connecting
road which is 2 km away and continue to our overnight camp at a waterfall (10 km).
Day 5
Side trip to the mine El Polaco through jungle downhill to Campo Grande (35 km).
Today we head towards the Brasilian border, downhill to the El Polaca mine.
It was here that the miner Barabas found the famous diamond, which was supposedly
sold to the Queen of England. After a short visit we continue on another path to
the road towards Sta. Elena. We stay in tents in the savannah about 25 km before
Sta. Elena.
Day 6
Drive on an Indian path to the Remac settlement through jungle and savannah (20 km).
After breakfast we continue through the forest and later through savannah with the
Chirikayen Tepui always in sight. After approx. 20 km we l reach the Indian settlement.
Day 7
Climb of the Tepui (1.500 m). Onwards to Sta. Elena on Indian paths.
In about 1,5 hours we reach the top of Chirikayan. From there, weather
permitting, we have a great view over the neighbouring tepuis (Roraima, Kukenan)
and the savannah. After we get back to the bottom we head towards Sta. Elena on Indian paths.
After about 3 hours we reach the last Venezuelan town before the Brazilian border. We stay
overnight at the beautiful camp of Camp Yakoo.
Day 8
Transfer to Paraitepui and tour on the Kukenan river towards Roraima (15 km).
In the morning there is time left to do some shopping. Around noon we take a jeep
heading north on a sealed road. After a short while the table top mountains appear in
the distance and get closer and closer. One hour later we reach San Francisco where
we take a dirt road to Parai Tepui, the starting point of our tour to Roraima. At
Parai Tepui we get our bikes ready and start. First of all a steep slope is awaiting us,
where we have to carry our bikes. We continue through hilly savannahs to the Kukenan River
where we put up our tents.
Day 9
Uphill to the base camp, 800 - 1.000 m difference in altitude. Optional climb to the top
of Roraima (1.200 m).
Today we continue through hilly savannahs with Roraima and Kukenan always in front of us.
In the early afternoon we reach the base camp and after lunch we can climb Roraima. After
approx. 5 hours we reach the top where we set up camp under a big rock. The bikes stay
in the base camp.
Day 10
Walk around the Roraima. Descent to base camp.
In the morning we have time to explore Roraima. The black, rocky landscape is very
impressive, it feels like another world. The different kinds of orchids and carnivorous
plants are truly interesting. The highest point of the tepui (2.800 m) permits stunning
views over the neighbouring tepuis. In the afternoon we go back to the base camp.
Day 11
Return to Parai Tepui and transfer to Sta. Elena.
We return the same way to Parai Tepui where we arrive in the afternoon. Here the
jeep is awaiting us and takes us back to Sta. Elena. We stay overnight again at the
Camp Yakoo.
Day 12
Transfer to the airport.
After breakfast you are transferred to the airport from where you take a flight to
Canaima, Ciudad Bolivar or Caracas (not included in the price). End of services.
General Information
Rated: Moderate/Strenuous. Daily stages are between 20 and 35 km, passing
through jungle, savannah and bogs where the bikes have to be carried.
The tour can be extended in order to stay one day longer at the Roraima Tepui.
Every biker carries his own gear in bike-sacks.
The food is basic as it has to be carried by bike and therefore cannot occupy
much space. Small amounts of food can be bought at Indian settlements.
Most of the time it will be basic items like manioc,
bananas, fruits, sardines and chicken.
