A great itinerary around the wildest regions of southern
Venezuela, to discover the last pristine jungles of our Earth and an unique opportunity
to meet several native people, some of them fully integrated in the modern Venezuela, others still living as
they always did throughout history. This is both an economic and comfortable journey
suitable for everybody provided you are fond of Wild Pure Nature.
The adventure starts in Puerto Ayacucho, the gateway of the Amazon Forest on the legendary Orinoco River.
The Amazonas State is a vast territory 2 third's of the size of Britain, fully covered with pristine rainforests
and almost only inhabited by a few native tribes, such as the once dreadful Yanomamies. Based in a native style comfortable lodge,
we explore the surrounding jungle, learn more about the local communities and sail along the Orinoco.
The second part of the journey is a canoe expedition along the Caura River, the Marikitare territory. This is a deep immersion
into a thick jungle where wildlife abounds.
Then you are invited to choose among different extensions (Canaima, beach, Venezuelan ranch....) around the most beautiful and unusual regions of the country
to finalise your holiday in Venezuela
The Itinerary
DAY 1: Caracas
Arrival in Caracas and transfer to Las Americas Hotel (*3) in the city centre.
DAY 2: Amazonas
Transfer to the airport to take the first flight to Puerto Ayacucho, the gateway
to the pristine Amazonas Region.
Welcome at the airport and transfer to Orinoquia Lodge, our base to explore the Amazonas for the next 4 nights.
The Lodge is designed in the typical native style and
ideally
located on the banks of the mighty Orinoco River. After lunch,
we hike around the Lodge to a vantage point to enjoy a splendid view over the
Orinoco.(B L D).
DAY 3: Amazonas
Morning excursion to a nearby native village, where we learn more about
native agriculture, healing plants and handicraft making (baskets, hammocks, traps).
An easy hike through the jungle gives us the opportunity
to observe the famous "24 hours ant", among other natural treasures.
In the afternoon, a visit to the "Tobogan de la Selva" a natural
water slide with pools. (B L D).
DAY 4: Amazonas
At the Lodge, we board a small boat for an unforgettable cruise on
Orinoco River, exploring little side streams hidden inside
the lush vegetation of the Amazon Forest.
With a little luck, we may see fresh water dolphins and
otters. There is enough time to swim and to sunbathe on the
beautiful beaches, which appear during dry season.(B L D)
DAY 5: Amazonas
After breakfast we drive to Puerto Ayacucho,
a very pleasant city and capital of the Amazonas State.
We visit the Indian market, where you can buy local handicraft.
In the afternoon, we visit the great ethnographic museum,
where the guide explains us everything about the local
Indian tribes and their way of life.
(B L D)
DAY 6:Puerto Ayacucho - Caura Lodge
Early morning, we take a scheduled bus to Maripa. The landscape
changes into hilly savannahs, crossed by many small rivers lined with
Moriche palm-trees. Huge black granite-rocks show up,
extensions of the former Guyana-shield. The savannah offers
an impressive panoramic view with its single growing palm
trees loosing themselves in the overwhelming landscape of
black rocks. After seven hours, we arrive at Maripa where
our guide awaits us.
Finally, we turn onto a small red dirt road to the south, which leads
through a dense jungle to Las Trincheras and to Caura Lodge, a beautiful
colonial-style house where our hostess awaits us.
In the evening, we enjoy a "parrilla" (barbecue) over an open fire
(B D).
DAY 7: Caura River
After breakfast, we venture to the beach "El Playon" at the rapids upriver.
A Trinchereno accompanies us, knowing the river with all its rapids
and rocks lying beneath the water's surface. After half an hour, we reach
the first rapids. During the dry-season, white beaches show up ashore,
perfect for taking a dip or a rest.
From time to time, we meet a curiara with Indians living at the upper
Caura (please no photographs!). It is quite a comfortable ride as long as
no tropical rain catches us. In the background, we discover the first mountains
indicating that we are near our destination. After 5 - 6 hours, the white
Playon-Beach lays in front of us (B L D).
DAY 8 : Caura River
Today, we walk to the Para-Falls, whose fog phenomenon
results from the water heating up during the day and the cool air laying over
it during a clear night. We walk through a dense rainforest. The river disappears from our
view when it enters a canyon. Two hours later, we hear the thunder of the
"Para-Falls", next to the former research station Cadafe (electricity company),
now home to Indians. In a lagoon above the
falls, we bath. Before walking back to our camp close to the falls, we buy arts and crafts from the Indians (B L D).
DAY 9 : Caura River
After breakfast, we head back to Caura Lodge, where we arrive around noon. In the afternoon,
we enjoy a last bath in the river or enjoy some kayaking (B L D).
DAY 10: Ciudad Bolivar
On our way to Ciudad Bolivar, we stop at a friend's place,
the "Jugo Caura", to enjoy his fresh made natural fruit-drinks.
After about 4 hours, we arrive in Ciudad Bolivar. Lodging in Posada La Angostura (3*), a magnificent
colonial house in the historic centre of the city, near the Orinoco promenade.(B)
DAY 11: Ciudad Bolivar
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Caracas, or continuation of your holiday in Venezuela (B).
