Trekking Humboldt

"Venezuela"

The Humboldt Glacier - Merida - Venezuela Venezuela's second highest mountain, the Humboldt (4942 meters), is just as impressive and arguably even more beautiful than its taller neighbour, Pico Bolivar. Part of the route is the same as the Trekking Bolivar; hiking through mysterious cloudforest, stark paramo (moor) and hauntingly quiet desert paramo. The climb to the top of Humboldt's broad flat glacier requires crampons and pick axes. The rope-and-harness ascent to the top challenges both your high-elevation mountaineering skills and personal courage, but the reward is unforgettable.

Humboldt peak - Merida - Venezuela

Day 1: (2130 m - 3200 m)
From Merida, we drive to La Mucuy (2.000 m), part of the Sierra Nevada National Park. From here, we hike up into the cloud forest, through an area of dense vegetation, of huge ferns, exotic bamboo, imposing trees covered with bromeliads, mosses, and hanging vines and an abundance of winged creatures. We pass several streams and small waterfalls and finally set up camp at Coromoto Lake at 3,200 m (L D).

Day 2: (3200 m - 4000 m)
Today, we hike along a steep and rocky path to Green Lake (4000 m), named for its brilliant emerald colour and located at the base of the impressive Humboldt (4992 m) and Bonpland Mountains (4890 m). The scenery opens up as we climb. We set up camp at La Laguna del Suero (4200 m) (B L D).

Day 3: (4000 m - 4600 m)
After an early breakfast, we start climbing up a steep rocky slope called "Morrena". Once on our way, we put our crampons on! We enjoy excellent views along the way of the top of the Humboldt. Just before reaching the summit, we make our way through rock and snow. Weather permitting, we enjoy the view of the distant Colombian Mountains and Pico Bolivar (only 5 km away). We return to Laguna del Suero for the night (B L D)

Day 4:
After breakfast, we hike back to our starting point from where we drive to Merida. (B L)
