The farming settlement of Los Nevados, nestled high up in the Valley of the Indians, is a
challenging place to get to. Foreigners and Venezuelans
alike marvel at the dusty self-sufficiency of this humble town. Los Nevados
offers a warm welcome and a glimpse into the past. We journey by
jeep, easier said than done, while treated with magnificent views of the highest
Andean peaks. Energised by a night at one of the family-style "posadas",
we continue by mule, to Alto de la Cruz, a pass striding both sides of the mountain range,
from where we enjoy the view of both the valley we just ascended and a hazy Merida
lost in the depths below. Hiking and camping in the fresh mountain
air is just as exhilarating as the hot springs and rainforest we trek
through on the way back to Merida.
The Itinerary
Day 1:
After a typical Andean breakfast, we drive in a 4WD Vehicle to the
small Oasis of El Morro. From here, a road, only suitable to
professional 4WD drivers, leads to the picturesque village of Los Nevados (2700m).
Once settled in a quaint inn, we walk around to appreciate this small and remote village suspended in time.
Overnight in Inn (B L D).
Day 2:
The mules take the strain climbing northwards up the
mountain valley to Alto de la Cruz at 4200 m, from where we
enjoy a wonderful view of the Pico Bolivar. Leaving the mules behind,
we hike downhill and set up camp at Los Calderones Valley (3500 m) (B L D).
Day 3:
After breakfast, we hike through the rainforest downhill to Mucunutan.
Along the way, we picnic and enjoy the views of Merida City down below.
Finally, our vehicles pick us up and drive us to the hot springs in the nearby town
of Tabay, where we relax before returning to Merida (B L)
