The Henri Pittier National Park covers the coastal mountain range, which makes part of the northern Andes. Although a small area, its staircase microclimate and unspoiled conditions created a treasure of different habitats; semi-dry deciduous woods, rainforests, cloudforests and coastal vegetation. At least 7% of the world's bird species live here. The Portachuelo Pass is a natural migratory route for birds and insects from distant places such as Argentina and Canada. Descendants of African slaves inhabit small coastal villages, such as Chuao and Choroni, still conserving some of the African-style folklore at the heart of the Venezuelan culture.
