The Henri Pittier National Park covers the coastal mountain range, which makes part of
the northern Andes. Although a small area, its staircase microclimate and unspoiled
conditions created a treasure of different habitats; semi-dry deciduous woods, rainforests,
cloudforests and coastal vegetation. At least 7% of the world's bird species live here.
The Portachuelo Pass is a natural migratory route for birds and
insects from distant places such as Argentina and Canada.
Under the direction of dictator Juan Vicente Gomez, they constructed a hotel
near the ridge of the mountain chain, only to abandon it when he died in 1935.
Later converted into Rancho Grande Biological Station, it now offers a unique
bird watching opportunity as well as accommodation.
