The famous Lost World of Arthur Conan Doyle was formed in a time when America
and Africa were one continent. Sheer-sided canyons, table mountains, impenetrable
forests and eerie rockformations led many to see what has not been seen for millions
of years. The mythical mountain of the Pemon Indians, or Green Hill, is
the oldest tepuy or table mountain in the Gran Sabana. High above the surrounding
tropical forest and lush grasslands, Roraima's mineral summit (2800 m) affords
breathtaking views that stretch into Guyana and Brazil (7 hours walking), making it one of the most
exciting and exotic climbs in tropical America.
Starting from the tiny indigenous village of Peraitepuy in the Gran Sabana, we ascend the
massif sandstone cliff and finally climb up a stretch, known as "The Ramp", where we
disappear into the cloud forest, on the edge of the abyss of the steep slope.
Finally, we reach the summit and discover the Lost World of eroded stone pillars and
standing rocks, where bromeliads, carnivorous plants and rare orchids abound. Climbing
the Roraima is travelling back to the origins of life. Isolated from the evolving world
below by the sheer cliffs, plants and animals adapted to the changing world in solitude.
It is home to the miner frog, bromeliads, orchids and carnivorous plants, found nowhere
else on Earth.
The Itinerary
DAY 1:
From the airport of Santa Elena de Uairen, we drive by 4WD across the Gran Sabana
to reach the starting point of our hike, the Pemon Indian Community of
Paray-tepuy. We hike 4 hours across gentle hills and savannahs to
the River Tek where we camp in tents (L D).
DAY 2:
Today, our goal is to reach the base of the tepuy, 10 km (6 miles)

40 metres (130 fts) wide Kukenan River.
Around 3PM, we reach the Base Camp at 1800 metres (6000 ft.) of altitude
where we set up camp. (B L D).
DAY 3:
Using the same route as Im Thurn in 1884 (first to climb Roraima), we climb up to the top
while admiring huge bromeliads, palms, primitive tree-like ferns and Stegolepis Guianensis.
We set up our tents on the summit (over 8000 ft) (B L D).
DAY 4:
The whole day to explore the wonders of the tepuy, to discover the secrets of the Crystal Valley, the Pit
(home of the White-collared Swift) and to observe different forms of endemic plants such as
the Drosera Roraima and Helianfora Nutans Pitcher Plant, both insectivorous plants.
Overnight in camp (B L D).
DAY 5:
We descend the Roraima and camp along the Tek River (B L D).
DAY 6:
We continue to Paray-tepuy from where we drive to Santa Elena de Uairen (arrive around 4PM). (B L).
